Found this excerpt last night in my world civ book (p.420) Under heading The Iberian Golden Age and thought how relevant it was to today. One of many examples of how civilizations fail.

Spain wasted the wealth of the New World in continuous wars, while neglecting to develop its own economy.

Does anyone see the Irony here?
